Home to five active and protracted conflicts, and three of the worst humanitarian crises on the planet, the Arab region’s women are greatly affected by the consequences of conflict, the rise of violent extremism and the rapidly growing refugee crisis. In times of conflict, women become disproportionately vulnerable to sexual violence, trafficking and deprivation from education and basic healthcare services.

In 2000, the UN Security Council adopted its historic resolution 1325 recognizing women’s special suffering in times of conflict and calling for women’s engagement in peacebuilding, recovery, humanitarian assistance and security operations. On the 4th and 5th of September, 2016, UN Women and the League of Arab States are holding a joint conference to translate a regional strategy and action plan developed with the support of UN Women to implement UNSCR 1325 in Arab States by developing National Action Plans (NAPs). So far, Iraq and Palestine are the only Arab states with NAPs to implement 1325. Both NAPs were developed with the support of UN Women.

تعاني نساء المنطقة العربية من الآثار المترتبة علي وجود 5 صراعات في سوريا والعراق واليمن وليبيا وفلسطين، و3 من أسوأ الأزمات الإنسانية في العالم كنتيجة لذلك في كل من سوريا والعراق واليمن بالإضافة لتصاعد موجة التطرف والإرهاب الذي يستهدف النساء بشكل كبير وأزمة اللجوء التي تعتبر الأسوأ في التاريخ منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية. في خضم تلك التحديات، تجد نساء المنطقة في مناطق النزاع عرضة للعنف الجنسي والإتجار والحرمان من التعليم والخدمات الصحية الأساسية.

في عام 2000، تبني مجلس الأمن قرار رقم 1325 والذي أقر بالآثار الخاصة للنزاعات علي النساء بالذات وطالب بتضمينهن في عمليات صنع السلام وإعادة البناء والتعافي وتقديم المساعدة الإنسانية. في الرابع والخامس من سبتمبر عام 2016، تنظم هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة بالشراكة مع جامعة الدول العربية لترجمة الاستراتيجية وخطط العمل الإقليميين والتي تم تطويرها بدعم من هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة لخطط عمل وطنية لتنفيذ قرار 1325. حتي الآن قامت دولتي العراق وفلسطين بتطير خطط عمل وطنية في هذا المجال وقد تم تطوير كل من تلك الخطتين بدعم من هيئة الأمم المتحدة للمرأة.
